Rhine-Main, commonly written Rhein-Main in German, refers to the Rhine-Main metropolitan region in central western Germany. The term describes the urban and economic area around the Main River as it flows toward the Rhine, with Frankfurt am Main at its core. The region straddles parts of the states of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate and includes several large cities along the Main and Rhine, most notably Frankfurt, Mainz, and Wiesbaden, as well as Offenbach am Main, Darmstadt, and Hanau.

Economy: The Rhine-Main region is one of Germany's leading economic areas. Frankfurt am Main is a global financial center, hosting the European Central Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, and the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, and serving as a major logistics hub. The region has a diversified economy with finance, services, information technology, life sciences, and manufacturing. The Rhine-Main area is served by a dense transport network and a large workforce, contributing substantially to regional GDP.

Transport: The area is anchored by Frankfurt Airport, one of Europe’s busiest, and by the Rhine-Main Transport Association (RMV), which coordinates commuter rail, trams, and buses across a large metropolitan network. Major highways connect the region to the rest of Germany and Europe.

Development and history: The Rhine-Main area has a long history as a trade and political center dating back to the Holy Roman Empire. In the modern era it developed into a leading European center for finance, logistics, and industry, while maintaining cultural and educational institutions.
