Beratnya

Beratnya is an Indonesian term formed from berat, meaning heavy or weight, plus the enclitic suffix -nya. It functions as a nominalized adjective that can refer to the weight or heaviness of something, and it can also act as a pronoun-like marker indicating possession or definiteness in a sentence. In translation, beratnya is often rendered as “its weight” or as “how heavy it is,” depending on context.

In grammar, -nya serves to indicate a definite or known reference and to link the adjective berat to a noun or discourse topic. Beratnya can stand as a subject or object in a sentence, and it frequently appears with verbs of measurement or description. Examples include: “Beratnya tas ini mencapai dua kilogram” (The weight of this bag reaches two kilograms) and “Beratnya membuat saya kesulitan membawanya” (Its weight makes it difficult for me to carry it). Another usage is to refer to the weight of an object already mentioned, as in “Beratnya batu itu membuat orang berhati-hati” (The weight of that stone makes people cautious when lifting it).

Beratnya can also function in a broader, metaphorical sense to discuss the weight or seriousness of a situation or problem, such as “Beratnya masalah itu sulit diatasi,” meaning the problem’s gravity is hard to overcome. The form is common in both spoken and written Indonesian and is contrasted with berat alone, which is simply the adjective meaning heavy without specifying reference.
