Belønningprediksjon, or reward prediction, is a concept central to reinforcement learning and behavioral economics. It refers to the process by which an agent or individual anticipates the value or desirability of a future outcome based on its past experiences and current context. This prediction is crucial for guiding decision-making, as it allows for the selection of actions that are expected to yield the greatest reward.

In the context of reinforcement learning, algorithms often employ a value function to estimate the expected future reward from a given state or state-action pair. This value function is updated over time as the agent interacts with its environment, refining its reward predictions based on the actual rewards received. A key mechanism for this refinement is the reward prediction error, which is the difference between the predicted reward and the actual reward. This error signal is used to adjust the value function, thereby improving future predictions.

In behavioral economics, reward prediction plays a role in understanding motivation, learning, and preference formation. For instance, when individuals anticipate a positive outcome from a certain behavior, they are more likely to engage in that behavior. Conversely, if an anticipated reward fails to materialize, or if a negative outcome is experienced instead, this can lead to a recalibration of reward predictions and subsequent behavioral changes.
