Beltschuursystemen, also known as brake pad systems, are a critical component of modern automotive braking technology. These systems consist of high‑friction materials that clamp onto the rotor of a wheel to create the resistance necessary for stopping or slowing down a vehicle. The primary function of a beltschuursysteem is to convert kinetic energy into heat through friction, thereby reducing vehicle speed.

There are several types of beltschuursystemen used in the automotive industry, including disc brakes, drum brakes, and linear piston systems. Disc brakes, which feature a caliper that squeezes brake pads against a rotating disc, are the most common in passenger cars due to their superior stopping power and better heat dissipation. Drum brakes use an inner drum and shoe mechanism, offering higher pad life but less performance at high speeds. Linear piston systems employ inclined planes to convert rotational input into linear force, providing an advantage in bicycles and electric scooters.

In addition to mechanical components, beltschuursystemen often incorporate technology for performance monitoring and safety. For example, anti‑lock braking systems (ABS) modulate pressure to prevent wheel lockup during emergency braking, while electronic stability control (ESC) uses brake signals to maintain vehicle stability.

Proper lubrication of pivot points and timely replacement of worn pads prevent uneven wear and extend the life of the entire braking assembly. Inspection schedules vary depending on vehicle type and usage conditions, but most manufacturers recommend a full brake inspection every 15,000 to 30,000 kilometres, or annually for more demanding driving environments.
