Belting

Belting is a term with multiple meanings across different fields. In music, belting refers to a vocal technique characterized by a strong, bright, and powerful projection produced in the higher part of the singer’s range. It is commonly used in musical theatre, pop, and gospel singing. Belting relies on supported breath and a balanced laryngeal setting, and it is distinct from falsetto or pure head voice. Proper technique and vocal training are often recommended to minimize strain, and singers may progress from lighter speaking-like tones to a connected mix voice.

In industry, belting denotes conveyor belting—the use of belts to move goods in manufacturing and logistics. Conveyor belts are continuous bands made from rubber, polyurethane, fabric, or other materials and run over pulleys or rollers. Belting selection depends on load, speed, temperature, chemical exposure, and environment; maintenance includes tracking, tensioning, and replacement.

As a verb, belting also means striking someone with a belt, a form of corporal punishment or assault. The practice has been widely criticized for potential injury. Legal status varies by country and jurisdiction, and many places prohibit or restrict belt-based punishment, especially for children.
