In this framework, knowledge is extracted from patterns of actions, choices, and outcomes as they occur in real-world settings or controlled experiments, often leveraging large-scale behavioural data.

The coinage of the term is informal and interdisciplinary, appearing in discussions across psychology, artificial intelligence, human–computer interaction, and behavioral analytics. It signals a methodological emphasis on external demonstrations of behavior as the basis for inference, prediction, and design, in contrast to accounts that prioritize internal cognitive processes or theoretical constructs.

Methods associated with behaviorderived include collecting sequential behavior data, identifying recurring patterns, and using data-driven modeling to predict future actions or optimize interventions. Techniques such as sequence modeling, clustering of behavior, and imitation or reinforcement learning may be described as behavior-derived when their training and validation rely primarily on observed behavior rather than on hypothesized internal states.

Applications span several fields. In AI and robotics, imitation learning and behavior cloning are often cited as behavior-derived approaches to training control policies. In user experience and marketing, behavior-derived analytics inform interface design, product recommendations, and personalized messaging by focusing on actual user journeys rather than stated preferences. Ethology and comparative psychology also employ behavior-derived methods to understand natural actions.
