Begattung

Begattung is a term used in German to denote the act of mating or copulation, the reproductive union between individuals for the purpose of fertilization. In zoological and veterinary contexts, begattung describes the behavioral and physiological processes that enable the transfer of sperm from a male to a female. The term is primarily employed in discussions of sexual reproduction across animals, though in everyday German usage it can also refer to general mating behavior.

Mating behavior includes courtship, signaling, and sometimes competition among potential mates. Species exhibit a range of mating systems, from strict monogamy to polygamy and promiscuity. Reproductive strategies are shaped by ecological factors such as resource availability, predation, and parental care patterns, influencing the frequency and timing of copulation.
