Beetakriptoksantiini

Beetakriptoksantiini, known in English as beta-cryptoxanthin, is a carotenoid pigment that belongs to the xanthophyll family. It is a provitamin A carotenoid, meaning the body can convert part of it into active retinol (vitamin A). It occurs in a variety of fruits and vegetables and contributes to the orange and yellow hues of many foods.

Dietary sources include citrus fruits such as oranges and mandarins, papaya, peaches, and peppers, as well as other fruits and vegetables. It is present in smaller amounts in a range of plant foods and can be found in animal-derived foods that accumulate carotenoids.

Absorption is fat-dependent: after intestinal uptake, beta-cryptoxanthin is incorporated into chylomicrons and transported to the liver and other tissues. In the mucosa and liver, some of it is cleaved to retinol, contributing to vitamin A status. The conversion efficiency is generally lower than that of beta-carotene from some foods.

As a carotenoid with antioxidant properties, beta-cryptoxanthin may help protect cells from oxidative stress and support eye health. Observational studies have explored links with reduced risk of certain chronic diseases, but results are not conclusive, and no definitive prevention benefits have been established for specific conditions.

Dietary intake from foods is considered safe. High-dose supplementation with beta-cryptoxanthin is not widely recommended and may carry risks in certain populations. For most people, a varied, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides useful amounts of beta-cryptoxanthin without the need for supplements.
