Beta‑carotene is a fat‑soluble pigment found naturally in carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens and certain fungi. In supplement form it is usually extracted from commercial carrot or tomato sources, purified and encapsulated in softgel or tablet form, sometimes combined with other antioxidants such as vitamin E or zinc.

The primary purpose of beetakaroteenilisät is to support vision, immune function and skin health, as the body converts beta‑carotene into retinol (vitamin A) when needed. They are also promoted for general antioxidant protection, reducing oxidative stress that can contribute to aging and chronic disease. Research indicates that while beta‑carotene can lower the risk of some cancers in specific groups, high doses have been linked to adverse effects among heavy smokers or asbestos workers, leading to increased lung‑cancer risk as revealed in several large cohort studies. Consequently, public health authorities recommend moderate consumption and advise caution for individuals with certain risk factors.

Dosage ranges vary between manufacturers, typically from 3 to 10 mg per day. Because beta‑carotene is fat‑soluble, it is best absorbed when taken with a meal that contains fat. Typical labeling also advises against intake above 15 mg per day unless under physician supervision. Supplements are generally regarded as safe when consumed within these limits, but liver toxicity has been reported in rare cases of exceedingly high intake. The EU and FDA regulate the labeling of these products under food supplements legislation, requiring that claims about health effects remain substantiated and not misleading.
