Batikkikynäs

Batikkikynäs is a specialized tool used in batik art, a dyeing technique traditionally practiced in Indonesia. The word "batikkikynäs" itself is Finnish and translates to "batik pen." This tool serves a similar purpose to a pen or brush, but instead of ink, it holds hot liquid wax.

The primary function of a batikkikynäs is to apply wax to fabric in a controlled manner. This wax acts as a resist, preventing dye from reaching the areas it covers. As the artist applies the wax, they create patterns and designs on the cloth. The wax is typically made from a mixture of paraffin and beeswax, which melts at a relatively low temperature and solidifies quickly on the fabric.

Batikkikynäs come in various designs, often featuring a small reservoir to hold the molten wax and a fine metal tip through which the wax flows. Some designs have a handle for comfortable grip, while others are simpler in construction. The precise application of wax is crucial for achieving intricate details and sharp lines in batik artwork. After the dyeing process, the wax is removed, usually by boiling the fabric, revealing the patterned design. The use of a batikkikynäs allows for a high degree of detail and precision, distinguishing it from other wax application methods in batik.
