Baselining

Baselining is the process of establishing a reference point for measuring subsequent performance, behavior, or conditions. The baseline records the state of a system, process, or project at a defined moment and serves as a standard for comparison as changes occur over time. It enables objective assessment of deviations, trends, and results.

In project management, baselines typically cover scope, schedule, and cost. These baselines are developed during planning and approved as the official reference against which performance is measured.
