Barranquitas

Barranquitas is a municipality located in the central mountain region of Puerto Rico. It is situated south of Orocovis and Corozal, east of Naranjito and Comerío, west of Aibonito, and north of Coamo and Villalba. The municipality is known for its mountainous terrain, often referred to as the "Ciudad de la Sierra" or "The Cloud City" due to its high elevation and frequent misty conditions.

The geography of Barranquitas is characterized by steep hills and valleys, with the highest point being Cerro La Punta, which is also the highest peak in Puerto Rico. This elevated location contributes to its cooler climate compared to the coastal areas of the island. The municipality is drained by several rivers and streams, including the Río Guavate and the Río Manabao.

Barranquitas is historically significant as the birthplace of Luis Muñoz Marín, the first elected governor of Puerto Rico and a key figure in the island's modern political development. The house where he was born is now a museum. The town's economy is primarily based on agriculture, with coffee, tobacco, and citrus fruits being important crops. Tourism also plays a role, attracting visitors interested in its natural beauty, historical sites, and cooler mountain air. The annual Fiestas Patronales, celebrating the patron saint, are a major cultural event.
