Corozal

Corozal is a town located in northern Belize, serving as the capital of the Corozal District. It sits on the shores of Corozal Bay, an inlet of the Chetumal Bay. The town's strategic location near the border with Mexico has historically made it an important trading post and a gateway between the two countries.

The area around Corozal has a rich history, with evidence of Maya civilization present in nearby archaeological sites such as Cerros and Santa Rita. During the colonial era, the region was settled by Mestizo refugees fleeing the Caste War of Yucatán in Mexico. This influx significantly shaped the cultural landscape of Corozal, contributing to its predominantly Spanish-speaking population and its distinct cultural traditions.

Corozal's economy is largely based on agriculture, with sugarcane being a major crop. Fishing and tourism also play a role, though tourism is less developed compared to other parts of Belize. The town is connected to the rest of Belize by the Philip Goldson Highway.
