The name Barnbor is constructed from common elements in historical English place-names, interpreted here as meaning "fortified farm" or "fortified town near barns." In the imagined history, Barnbor developed in the medieval period around a market crossroads and a shallow river, growing gradually through the Early Modern era before undergoing 19th-century agricultural intensification.

The town sits on level to gently rolling terrain, with fertile loess soils in the surrounding farmland. The climate is temperate, with cool winters and warm summers and rainfall distributed evenly through the year.

The fictional population is about 3,200 residents. The economy centers on agriculture, with dairy and arable crops forming the base, supplemented by a small manufacturing park, light services, and local trades.

Barnbor is connected by a regional rail line and highway. The railway, known as the Barnbor Valley Line in this construct, links to larger urban centers. Local bus services connect neighborhoods and the outlying farms.
