Barkóðum

Barkóðum, also known as barcodes, are a method of representing data visually through a pattern of parallel lines and spaces that can be scanned and interpreted by machines. Originating in the late 20th century, barcodes are widely used for rapid identification and data capture across various industries, including retail, manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare.

The most common form of barcode is the linear or one-dimensional (1D) barcode, which encodes information such as product numbers, prices, and inventory details. These are typically scanned using handheld or fixed barcode readers. 2D barcodes, such as QR codes, store more data in a smaller space and can be scanned using standard cameras, enabling functionalities like website URLs, contact information, and complex data storage.

Barcodes function by representing data as a series of black and white bars with varying widths. The pattern correlates with specific characters according to standardized encoding schemes, such as Universal Product Code (UPC), Code 39, or QR code standards.
