Baltsdansen

Baltsdansen, meaning "the Baltic dance" in Swedish and some other Nordic languages, refers to a family of traditional folk dances associated with the Baltic region. The term is used primarily in Nordic cultural contexts to describe dances linked to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as related practices in neighboring communities. It does not denote a single fixed choreography, but a spectrum of styles grouped under a common regional umbrella.

Historically, baltsdansen grew from long-standing communal dancing that accompanied weddings, harvest celebrations, and religious or seasonal observances. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Baltic and neighboring revival movements helped codify repertoires, collect regional tunes, and organize performances by folk groups and national ensembles. Today the dances are maintained through folk clubs, cultural associations, and festival stages.
