Ballkanit
Ballkanit is a synthetic alloy first synthesized in 2024 by a consortium of materials scientists in Vienna. The alloy is composed primarily of a rare earth metal, scandium, combined with lithium and trace amounts of carbon, and is notable for its exceptionally high tensile strength combined with a low density. By alloying scandium with lithium, Ballkanit achieves a compression resistance that is roughly twice that of conventional aluminum alloys, while its density remains only 5% greater than pure aluminum.
The name “Ballkanit” derives from the initial research team, the Ballistic Advanced Light‑weight Alloy Consortium, and
Commercial production of Ballkanit began in 2026, with a small-scale pilot plant located near the original
