Balaustros

Balaustro, with the plural balaustros, is an architectural term referring to a vertical supporting element in a balustrade. A balaustro is typically a small, column-like post placed at regular intervals to support a handrail or coping along stairs, balconies, terraces, and façades. Its shape can range from simple cylindrical or hexagonal forms to more elaborate, vase- or urn-shaped profiles.

Etymology and context: The term balaustro derives from the Italian balausto or Latin balaustrum, which in turn traces to Greek etymology related to the pomegranate flower or fruit. In architectural usage, balaustros are the decorative and structural members that give the balustrade its rhythm and vertical emphasis.

Design and materials: Balaustros can be solid or hollow and are commonly made from stone, marble, wood, or metal. They may be fluted or smooth, and their proportions vary by architectural style. In classical and neoclassical architecture, balaustros often feature rounded or bulbous profiles with a pronounced central waist, while later styles may favor simplified forms.
