This includes tracks, stations, bridges, tunnels, power supply, signaling and communications systems, as well as the associated civil and structural works. The discipline spans land selection, environmental assessment, and integration with broader transport networks.

Historically, Bahnbau emerged with the expansion of railways in the 19th century, evolving from simple lines to sophisticated civil engineering works. Over time, standardization of gauge, ballasted track, and large-scale earthworks became common. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, electrification, advanced signaling, automation, and high-speed rail have shaped modern practice, along with increasingly stringent safety and environmental requirements.

Key elements of Bahnbau include route planning and surveying, geotechnical studies, and civil engineering works such as earthworks, embankments, cuttings, bridges, and tunnels. The track system comprises ballast, sleepers, rails, and fastening systems. On the surface, stations and platforms form the passenger interface, while drainage and environmental controls manage water and soil stability. Electrical systems, including overhead contact lines or third rails, power supply substations, and traction systems, are integrated with signaling and telecommunications to ensure safe operation and control.

Construction processes typically proceed from feasibility and detailed design to procurement and on-site execution. Core activities include earthmoving, track laying and ballast compaction, structure construction, installation of electrical and signaling systems, and comprehensive testing and commissioning, followed by handover to operators.
