Baarkodeerimine is a method of data retrieval using a bar code, typically consisting of a series of vertical lines of different thicknesses. The code is scanned using a laser or camera-based device, transmitting the encoded data to a computer or other electronic device.

The development of bar codes dates back to the 1940s, when supermarkets in the United States began using a system called the "Universal Product Code" (UPC) to identify products at the checkout counter. Over time, the technology improved, and new types of bar codes were developed, including the more complex International Article Number (EAN) and the Code 128.
