Avskalling

Avskalling is a term used to describe the peeling or shedding of an outer layer, most often referring to skin in medical contexts and to coatings or other materials in technical settings. The word derives from the idea of something being peeled away or flaked off.

In dermatology, avskalling describes exfoliation or scaling of the skin. It can be a normal part of skin renewal but may also indicate an underlying condition. Common causes include dry or irritated skin, eczema (dermatitis), psoriasis, fungal infections, sunburn, and allergic or irritant reactions. Some medications can also provoke exfoliation as a side effect. Symptoms typically include flaking, scaling, redness, itching, and sometimes pain or cracking. Diagnosis is usually clinical, supported by history; in uncertain cases, skin scrapings, cultures, or biopsies may be used. Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause, using gentle skin care, moisturizers, and avoiding irritants. Inflammation or infection may require topical or systemic treatments such as steroids, antifungals, or antibiotics.

In coatings and materials, avskalling refers to paint, varnish, or other surface coatings peeling away from a substrate. Causes include moisture ingress, substrate contamination, poor surface preparation, inadequate adhesion, improper coating systems, or environmental stress. Prevention centers on proper surface cleaning, drying, and priming, selecting compatible primers and topcoats, and maintaining appropriate environmental conditions during application. When avskalling occurs, removal of loose material followed by surface re-preparation and re-coating is typically necessary. The term underscores the importance of adhesion and compatibility between layers to ensure durable performance.
