Avosilmukka

Avosilmukka, in Finnish control theory, refers to an open-loop control system. It is a type of feedback-less control where the control action is determined solely by a predefined input or schedule, without using measurements of the process output to adjust the input.

In an avosilmukka, the signal that drives the actuator, u(t), is independent of the plant output, y(t). The system typically includes a controller, an actuator, and the process or plant to be controlled. There is no feedback path that feeds y back into the controller to modify u. As a result, the performance of an open-loop system relies on a accurate model of the process and stable operating conditions.

Advantages of open-loop control include simplicity, low cost, and fast response, since there is no feedback loop to manage. It is also easy to implement in situations with predictable, repeatable processes. However, avosilmukka is sensitive to disturbances, model inaccuracies, and changes in external conditions, because there is no mechanism to correct deviations from the desired outcome.

Common applications are tasks with known, repeatable behavior or where environmental variation is minimal, such as simple timing or sequencing operations, basic manufacturing steps with fixed durations, or certain laboratory procedures. In practice, avosilmukka is often contrasted with suljettu silmukka (closed-loop) control, where feedback from the output is used to regulate the input.
