Autotootmise

Autotootmise refers to the mass production of motor vehicles, especially passenger cars, within dedicated factories. The term is used in Estonian to describe automobile manufacturing, including the development, tooling, assembly, and testing of vehicles as a unified production system.

Overview of the production process: It begins with vehicle design and engineering, followed by tooling and the setup of production lines. The body shop constructs the vehicle frame, often using stamping and welding to form the body in white. The paint shop applies primer, coatings, and finishes. The assembly line then fits the powertrain, suspension, interiors, and electronics, finishing with quality checks and testing before delivery. Many factories use modular platforms to share components across models and employ just-in-time logistics to minimize inventory.

Automation and technology: Modern autotootmise relies heavily on robotics, conveyors, and automation cells to perform welding, painting, and assembly tasks. Industry 4.0 concepts—digital twins, real-time data analytics, and predictive maintenance—are used to increase efficiency, flexibility, and quality. Inline inspection and end-of-line testing help ensure safety and performance standards.

Economic and environmental aspects: Car manufacturing scales benefit from economies of scale, global supplier networks, and standardized processes. Environmental considerations include energy use, emissions, waste management, and end-of-life recycling. Regulators set safety and emissions standards that factories must meet, influencing design choices and plant layouts.
