Authoriality

Authoriality refers to the authority or power of an author to create, shape, and control the content of a work. It encompasses the author's ability to make decisions about the narrative, characters, themes, and style of a piece of writing. Authoriality is a central concept in literary studies, particularly in the fields of narrative theory, poststructuralism, and feminist theory.

The concept of authoriality has evolved significantly over time. Traditionally, the author was seen as the sole creator of a text, with a clear and singular voice. This view is often attributed to the Romantic era, where the author was celebrated as a genius whose unique perspective shaped the work. However, this notion has been challenged by various theoretical approaches.

Poststructuralist theories, such as those of Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida, argue that the author's voice is not as fixed or singular as traditionally believed. They suggest that texts are always already a product of multiple influences and interpretations, making the notion of a single authorial voice problematic.
