Atmosfäärivoogusid, commonly referred to as atmospheric rivers, are long, narrow regions in the atmosphere that transport significant amounts of water vapor from the tropics towards the poles. They are essentially concentrated plumes of moisture that can carry as much water vapor as dozens of the Mississippi Rivers. These phenomena play a crucial role in the Earth's water cycle, delivering precipitation to many regions, particularly on the western coasts of continents.

The formation of atmospheric rivers is closely linked to large-scale weather patterns, often associated with extratropical cyclones. They are characterized by strong winds that channel moisture over vast distances. When an atmospheric river makes landfall, it can lead to intense rainfall and snowfall, which can cause flooding and landslides, but also replenish water reserves crucial for agriculture and ecosystems.

While beneficial in many ways, the intensity of atmospheric rivers can vary. Stronger events are linked to an increase in extreme precipitation and subsequent hazards. Understanding the behavior and variability of atmospheric rivers is therefore important for weather forecasting, climate research, and water resource management. Scientists study them using a combination of satellite data, weather models, and ground-based observations to better predict their impact.
