Ateneumin

Ateneumin, commonly referred to as the Ateneum, is the Finnish National Gallery's classic art museum in Helsinki, Finland. It holds the largest collection of Finnish classic art, dating from the 19th century to the early 20th century.

The museum's collection features works by prominent Finnish artists such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Helene Schjerfbeck, Magnus Enckell, and Eero Järnefelt. It presents a survey of Finnish art from romantic nationalism to early modernism, including portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes.

The Ateneum building was designed in the National Romantic style by architects Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren, and Eliel Saarinen, and opened in 1887. Its brick façade and refined interior spaces are used to display the holdings in a manner that emphasizes historical development and national context.

As part of the Finnish National Gallery, Ateneum operates alongside the Kiasma contemporary art museum and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum. It hosts changing exhibitions, educational programs for visitors of all ages, and public tours, and it maintains extensive conservation and research activities to support its collections.
