Gallery

A gallery is a room or building dedicated to the display and often the sale of visual art or other objects. The term can also refer to a collection of images presented as a set, such as a photograph gallery on a website. Etymology traces the word to French galerie and Italian galleria, from Latin galeria, meaning a place of passage or covered walk.

Art galleries include public institutions and privately operated spaces that present rotating exhibitions and may offer educational programs and events. They may focus on a particular medium, period, or artist, or host multidisciplinary shows. Commercial galleries usually work by representing artists and selling works to collectors, while nonprofit galleries may be funded by patrons, grants, or admission.

Architectural galleries: In architecture, a gallery is a long, open or covered passage that forms part of a building and often contains windows or an open upper level. Examples include a church nave gallery or the upper balcony in a theater.

History and function: The idea of spaces for public viewing evolved in Renaissance courts and in the 17th and 18th centuries with cabinets of curiosities and salons. Public galleries became more common in the 18th and 19th centuries, culminating in modern art museums and commercial galleries in the 20th century.

Functions and formats: Galleries serve exhibition, collection management, interpretation, and education. Digital galleries host online displays, virtual exhibitions, or institutional collections. Accessibility and inclusion are increasingly prioritized, with captions, audio descriptions, and multilingual labels to reach broader audiences.
