Ateneum

Ateneum is the main building of the Finnish National Gallery in Helsinki, Finland. It houses the national collection of Finnish art from the 18th to the 20th century and serves as a primary venue for exhibitions, research, and public education related to Finnish art. As one of the three museums that comprise the Finnish National Gallery, Ateneum operates alongside Kiasma, which focuses on contemporary art, and the Sinebrychoff Art Museum, which holds a general collection.

The permanent collection at Ateneum emphasizes Finnish painting and sculpture, with works spanning landscape, genre, portrait, and history painting. It has strong holdings from the golden age of Finnish art and later movements, including artists such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Helene Schjerfbeck, Eero Järnefelt, and Pekka Halonen. In addition to its permanent collection, the museum presents temporary exhibitions, loans, and educational programs that explore Finnish art in a broader European context.

The name Ateneum derives from the Greek word Athenaeum, reflecting its educational and cultural mission. Since its founding in the 19th century, the Ateneum has been a central institution for the preservation, study, and presentation of Finnish art and remains a major cultural landmark in Helsinki.
