Astringitis

Astringitis is not a widely recognized medical diagnosis in modern practice. In some sources, the term describes inflammation of mucous membranes associated with exposure to astringent agents, or is used as a nonstandard label for other mucosal inflammations of the mouth, throat, or upper GI tract.

Symptoms can include burning, dryness, redness, swelling, and sensitivity to foods. Location may vary, with involvement of the oral cavity, pharynx, or esophagus. Because the term is not standardized, clinicians often diagnose more specific conditions such as stomatitis, pharyngitis, or gastritis when appropriate.

Causes and risk factors include exposure to astringent substances (tannins in tea or wine, certain mouthwashes), chemical burns from irritants, medications, tobacco, and persistent mucosal irritation. Chronic symptoms may reflect ongoing irritant exposure or an underlying mucosal disorder.

Diagnosis relies on history and examination. There are no specific tests for astringitis; evaluation seeks to identify irritants, infection, or systemic disease. In unclear cases, endoscopy or biopsy may be used to assess alternative explanations.

Treatment centers on eliminating triggers and providing symptomatic relief. Approaches include avoidance of irritants, gentle oral care, protective topical agents, and management of any underlying gastritis or pharyngitis according to standard guidelines. The prognosis is favorable when irritants are removed.
