Arytmiöihin, commonly known as arrhythmias, are irregularities in the heart's rhythm. This means the heart beats too fast, too slow, or with an irregular pattern. These variations can occur in the upper chambers (atria) or lower chambers (ventricles) of the heart.

Causes of arrhythmias are diverse and can include underlying heart disease, such as coronary artery disease or heart failure, as well as non-cardiac factors like electrolyte imbalances, thyroid problems, certain medications, alcohol consumption, and stress. In some cases, the cause may remain unknown.

Symptoms can range from unnoticeable to severe. Some individuals experience palpitations, a fluttering or pounding sensation in the chest, while others might feel dizzy, short of breath, or even faint. Chest pain can also be a symptom. However, many arrhythmias do not cause any noticeable symptoms and are often discovered incidentally during routine medical examinations.

Diagnosis typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG), which records the electrical activity of the heart. Longer-term monitoring, such as Holter monitoring or event recorders, may be used to capture intermittent arrhythmias. Further tests like echocardiograms or electrophysiology studies might be necessary to determine the specific type and cause.

Treatment depends on the type of arrhythmia, its severity, and the presence of symptoms. Options include lifestyle modifications, medications to control heart rate or rhythm, or procedures like electrical cardioversion. In some cases, an implanted device like a pacemaker or defibrillator may be required. Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to prevent potential complications, such as stroke or heart failure.
