Artpmap

Artpmap is a term used in some digital art information systems to denote a mapping construct that links artwork records to external identifiers, metadata records, or resource locations. It is not a universally standardized component, and its exact meaning and implementation vary by project.

In typical deployments, an artpmap entry associates a local artwork identifier with one or more external identifiers (for example, a catalog number, a DOI, or a museum-facing URI) and can include metadata about the mapping itself, such as the source, date of creation, and provenance. The mapping enables stable referencing across catalogs and publications, even if the local record changes.

Data models for artpmap are often implemented as a small table or index within a database, or as a structured field in a metadata schema. Fields may include: local_id, map_type, external_id, target_uri, metadata_profile, provenance. Systems may expose artpmap data via APIs to support catalog integration and cross-referencing.

Relation to standards: artpmap is generally aligned with broader metadata practices such as Dublin Core, METS, or CIDOC CRM, but there is no universal specification. Implementation tends to be project-specific and governed by cataloging policies, data stewardship, and authority control.
