Arpakuutaa

Arpakuutaa is the Finnish term for a raffle drum, a device used to draw random winners in lotteries, raffles, and fundraising events. The basic idea is to provide a tangible, auditable method for mixing tickets or entry slips and selecting one or more wins. In typical setups, tickets are placed inside a sealed container, the tickets are mixed by rotating or shaking, and a ticket is drawn through a release or chute for the winner to be announced.

Historically, raffle drums have been a common sight at public events, fairs, and charitable campaigns, where they offered a transparent way to determine prizes. In Finland and other Nordic contexts, arpakuutaa has long been associated with formal draws conducted for community fundraising or public lotteries, though the general concept exists in many cultures under different names.

Design and variants often vary by material and mechanism. Modern arpakuutaa are commonly made from clear plastic or metal, allowing onlookers to see the tickets inside.
