Armbeygjum

Armbeygjum, commonly known as push-ups, are a fundamental bodyweight exercise that targets multiple muscle groups, primarily the chest, shoulders, and triceps. The exercise involves lowering the body from a plank position towards the floor by bending the elbows and then pushing back up to the starting position.

To perform a standard push-up, an individual assumes a prone position with their hands placed slightly wider than shoulder-width apart, directly beneath their shoulders. The body should be in a straight line from head to heels, with the core engaged and glutes squeezed. As the person lowers their body, their elbows should bend and move slightly backward, not flaring out to the sides. The chest should approach the floor, ideally touching it. The movement is then reversed by extending the arms to return to the plank position.

Variations of the armbeygjum exist to modify difficulty or target specific muscle areas. Decline push-ups, where the feet are elevated, increase the resistance on the upper chest and shoulders. Incline push-ups, with the hands elevated on a surface, reduce the resistance, making them suitable for beginners. Close-grip push-ups, with hands placed closer together, emphasize the triceps more. Other variations include diamond push-ups, wide-grip push-ups, and plyometric push-ups.

Armbeygjum are a versatile exercise that can be performed almost anywhere without equipment, making them a popular choice for home workouts, military training, and general fitness routines.
