Arlandic

Arlandic is a constructed language created for a fictional setting in which the inhabitants of the land of Arland use it as their primary means of communication. It is used in fantasy literature, tabletop role-playing games, and community language projects to give the culture a distinct linguistic texture. The design aims for a balance between learnability for readers and expressive depth for worldbuilding.

Phonology and writing systems: Arlandic centers on a five-vowel system (a, e, i, o, u) and a modest consonant inventory that includes p, t, k, m, n, s, l, r, w, and j. Stress is generally predictable, falling on the penultimate syllable. The language is written with a Latin-based alphabet, augmented by diacritics to indicate vowel quality and stress. Earlier texts sometimes used a local syllabary, but the modern standard relies on the Latin script with diacritics.

Grammar and syntax: Arlandic is mildly agglutinative, with suffixes that mark tense, aspect, mood, number, and case. The basic word order is subject–verb–object, and determiners precede nouns. Plurality and definiteness are often indicated by suffixes rather than separate articles. Adjectives typically precede nouns and agree in number with the nouns they modify. The pronoun system includes inclusive and exclusive forms for the first-person plural.

Dialects and sociolinguistic context: Dialects include Northern Arlandic and Southern Arlandic, differing mainly in vowel shifts and certain consonant realizations. In-world usage features a small but active learner community and authors who share materials and sample texts online. Arlandic serves as a lingua franca for intercultural exchange within Arland, though multilingualism is common among speakers.
