Ardhamagadhi, also spelled Ardha-Magadhi, is an ancient Prakrit language that served as the primary language of Jain canonical literature. It is a middle form of Magadhi Prakrit and is named for its association with the Magadha region of ancient India. The term Ardhamagadhi literally means “half-Magadhi” or “semi-Magadhi,” reflecting its status as an intermediary dialect within the Magadhan Prakrit family.
