Arcidegbénulás

Arcidegbénulás, also known as facial paralysis or Bell's palsy, is a condition characterized by sudden weakness or paralysis of the muscles on one side of the face. This typically results in a drooping appearance of the mouth and eyelid on the affected side, as well as difficulty with facial expressions like smiling or closing the eye. The exact cause of arcidegbénulás is not always known, but it is often attributed to inflammation of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII), which controls the muscles of facial expression. Viral infections, such as herpes simplex virus, are frequently suspected as triggers.

The onset of arcidegbénulás is usually abrupt, often occurring within hours or a few days. While the paralysis is typically temporary, the duration and severity can vary greatly among individuals. In many cases, a full recovery is achieved within weeks or months. Treatment often involves corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and antiviral medications if a viral cause is strongly suspected. Eye care is also crucial to protect the affected eye from dryness and injury, which can occur due to the inability to close the eyelid properly. Physical therapy may be recommended to help regain muscle strength and control. While generally benign, in rare instances, arcidegbénulás can be a symptom of more serious underlying neurological conditions, necessitating further medical investigation.
