Appletiedostojärjestelmä, often translated as Apple File System or APFS, is a proprietary file system developed by Apple Inc. It was first introduced in 2017 with the release of iOS 10.3 and macOS High Sierra. APFS is designed to replace the older HFS+ file system, which had been in use for decades.

One of the key features of APFS is its focus on speed and efficiency, especially for solid-state drives (SSDs). It incorporates optimizations for flash storage, leading to faster file operations and better overall performance. APFS also includes enhanced data integrity features, such as snapshots and cloning, which allow for efficient creation and management of file system states. Snapshots enable users to revert to previous versions of files or the entire file system, while cloning allows for instant duplication of files and directories without consuming additional disk space until modifications are made.

Space sharing is another significant advantage of APFS. Unlike traditional file systems where partitions have fixed sizes, APFS allows multiple volumes within a single container to share the available free space. This eliminates the need for manual resizing of partitions and makes more efficient use of storage. APFS also supports strong encryption, with options for full-disk encryption and per-file encryption, enhancing data security on Apple devices. Its modern architecture is optimized for the features and hardware found in current Apple products.
