Aortasinus

Aortasinus is not a standard term in contemporary anatomy or clinical medicine. In published medical usage, it is likely a misnomer or shorthand that could refer to either the aortic root in general or specifically to the sinuses of Valsalva (the aortic sinuses). The proper term to describe the dilated portions of the aortic root just above the aortic valve cusps is the sinuses of Valsalva.

The sinuses of Valsalva are three small dilatations of the aortic root, named the right, left, and non-coronary sinuses. Each sinus lies behind a corresponding aortic valve cusp; the right coronary artery typically originates from the right aortic sinus, the left coronary artery from the left aortic sinus, and the non-coronary sinus generally has no coronary ostium. These sinuses help accommodate the openings for the coronary arteries and contribute to smooth closure of the aortic valve by shaping the flow of blood as the valve closes.

Clinically, pathology can involve the aortic sinuses, most notably as a Valsalva aneurysm, a dilation that can rupture into surrounding spaces and produce serious consequences. Valsalva aneurysms are relatively rare and may be congenital or associated with connective tissue disorders or bicuspid aortic valve. Diagnosis is typically made by imaging studies such as transthoracic or transesophageal echocardiography, computed tomography, or magnetic resonance imaging. Management depends on size, growth, and symptoms, with surgical repair or intervention considered for significant orrupting cases. If the term aortasinus appears in literature, it is prudent to seek clarification or rely on the standard terms aortic root or the sinuses of Valsalva.
