Antrostomy

An anostomy, commonly referred to as an anostomy, is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening between the anus and the abdominal wall. This procedure is typically performed to relieve obstruction in the lower gastrointestinal tract or to manage severe complications such as fecal impaction, severe constipation, or certain types of colorectal cancer. It may also be used in cases of severe inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, where the rectum or anus is severely damaged.

The procedure involves making an incision in the abdominal wall and connecting it to the anus or colon, allowing stool to bypass the lower gastrointestinal tract and exit through the newly created opening. Anostomies can be temporary or permanent, depending on the underlying condition and the patient’s prognosis. Temporary anostomies are often reversed once the original issue has been resolved, whereas permanent anostomies may be necessary in cases where the natural passage cannot be restored.

Anostomies require careful postoperative care, including wound management, stoma care, and dietary adjustments to prevent complications such as infection, skin irritation, or electrolyte imbalances. Patients with an anostomy must learn to manage their stoma effectively, which may involve using ostomy bags to collect waste. Physical and emotional support is often provided through specialized healthcare teams, including surgeons, nurses, and dietitians, to ensure a smooth recovery and adaptation to the procedure.

While anostomy is a life-saving intervention for many, it can significantly alter a patient’s quality of life.
