Antihypertenzívák

Antihypertenziva, also known as blood pressure medications, are a class of drugs used to treat high blood pressure, or hypertension. High blood pressure is a condition where the force of blood against the artery walls is too high, increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney problems. Antihypertensives work by various mechanisms to lower blood pressure, making the heart's job easier and reducing strain on blood vessels.

There are several main categories of antihypertensives. Diuretics, often called water pills, help the body eliminate excess sodium and water, which reduces blood volume and thus blood pressure. Beta-blockers work by slowing the heart rate and reducing the force with which the heart pumps blood. ACE inhibitors and ARBs (angiotensin II receptor blockers) block certain hormonal pathways that cause blood vessels to constrict, leading to their widening and lower pressure. Calcium channel blockers reduce the amount of calcium entering muscle cells in the heart and blood vessel walls, causing them to relax and widen. Other classes include alpha-blockers and direct renin inhibitors, each with distinct modes of action.

The choice of antihypertensive medication depends on various factors, including the severity of hypertension, the patient's age, other medical conditions they may have, and potential side effects. Often, a single medication may be sufficient, but many individuals require a combination of drugs to achieve optimal blood pressure control.
