Anti-Catholicism is prejudice, discrimination, or hostility directed against Catholics or the Catholic Church. This antagonism has manifested in various historical and cultural contexts, often stemming from theological differences, political rivalries, and social anxieties. Historically, anti-Catholic sentiment was particularly strong in Protestant-majority countries, fueled by interpretations of the Bible, fears of papal authority, and accusations of corruption within the Church.

During the Reformation, religious conflicts often translated into widespread anti-Catholicism. In England, laws were enacted that restricted Catholic worship and participation in public life. The United States also witnessed significant anti-Catholicism, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the rise of nativist movements and organizations like the Ku Klux Klan targeting Catholic immigrants. These movements often accused Catholics of disloyalty to their adopted countries and allegiance to a foreign power, the Vatican.

Stereotypes associated with anti-Catholicism have included portraying Catholics as superstitious, intellectually inferior, secretive, and prone to conspiracy. Such prejudices have appeared in literature, political cartoons, and public discourse. While the intensity of overt anti-Catholicism has diminished in many parts of the world, subtle forms of prejudice and discrimination can still persist.
