Antagningen

Antagningen is the centralized system for higher education admissions in Sweden. It refers to the process through which individuals apply for programs at universities and university colleges and the national service that manages those applications, commonly via the website antagning.se. The system is overseen by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (Universitets- och högskolerådet, UHR) in cooperation with higher education institutions.

Applications are for programmes at bachelor's and master's levels, with admissions for autumn and spring terms. Through antagning.se, applicants create an account, select programs and courses, and upload required documentation such as transcripts, diplomas, and language proficiency. Eligibility is determined on the basis of completed secondary education and any prerequisites required by the programme; the selection also uses merit values (meritvärde) that combine grades, course results, and, for some programmes, additional selections such as tests, auditions, or portfolios.

Programs are offered based on limited admission spots; applicants are ranked according to merit and program-specific rules. Admission results, called antagningsbesked, are published online; offers must typically be accepted by a deadline, and further rounds or waiting lists may follow if places remain. If an offer is not accepted or for other reasons, applicants may be considered for alternative admissions rounds.
