Anhydrus is a genus of freshwater cichlid fish within the family Cichlidae. Native to the inland waters of Central America, particularly in Nicaragua, Honduras, and parts of Costa Rica, species within this genus are appreciated by aquarium enthusiasts for their vibrant colors and active behavior.

The genus Anhydrus was first described in the early 20th century, and since then, several species have been identified and classified under this group. These fish typically inhabit slow-moving rivers, lakes, and flooded forests, where they prefer environments rich in aquatic vegetation and submerged structures. Their diet mainly consists of small invertebrates, algae, and plant matter, which they forage among rocks and plants.

Anhydrus species generally exhibit moderate sizes, with adults ranging from 10 to 15 centimeters (4 to 6 inches) in length. They display a variety of color morphs, often characterized by bright blues, yellows, and iridescent hues, making them popular in the aquarium trade. Breeding behaviors include maternal mouthbrooding, where the female carries and guards the eggs and fry until they are developed.

The care requirements for Anhydrus species include maintaining clean, well-oxygenated water with stable pH levels around 6.5 to 7.5 and moderate water temperatures between 24-28°C (75-82°F). They are generally hardy but can be territorial, especially during breeding, requiring appropriate tank mates and sufficient space.
