Andmekaitseõigusaktid, or data protection laws, are legal frameworks designed to safeguard individuals' personal data. These laws establish rules and principles for how organizations collect, process, store, and share personal information. The primary goal is to give individuals control over their data and prevent its misuse.

In Estonia, the cornerstone of data protection is the Isikuandmete kaitse seadus (Data Protection Act), which largely implements the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The GDPR sets a high standard for data privacy across all EU member states, ensuring a consistent approach to protecting personal data. Key principles include data minimization, purpose limitation, accuracy, storage limitation, and integrity and confidentiality.

These legal acts grant individuals several rights. These include the right to access their data, rectify inaccuracies, request erasure (the "right to be forgotten"), restrict processing, and object to certain types of processing. Data subjects also have the right to data portability, allowing them to obtain and reuse their personal data for their own purposes.

Organizations handling personal data are obligated to comply with these regulations. This often involves implementing technical and organizational measures to ensure data security, conducting data protection impact assessments for high-risk processing activities, and appointing a data protection officer in certain cases. Failure to comply can result in significant fines and reputational damage. The aim of these legal instruments is to build trust and ensure responsible handling of personal information in the digital age.
