Anaerobetargeted refers to a strategic approach in various fields, primarily in medicine and biotechnology, focused on selectively acting upon or targeting anaerobic environments or organisms. Anaerobic refers to conditions where oxygen is absent or present in very low concentrations. These environments can be found naturally within the human body, such as in the gut microbiome or deep within tissues, and also in industrial processes or in specific geological settings.

In a medical context, anaerobetargeted therapies aim to deliver drugs or treatments specifically to anaerobic bacteria, which are often responsible for infections in certain body sites. This targeted delivery can minimize damage to healthy, oxygen-dependent tissues and reduce systemic side effects. For example, certain antibiotics are designed to be activated or effective only in the low-oxygen conditions where anaerobic pathogens thrive. Research is also exploring the development of imaging agents or therapeutic nanoparticles that can preferentially accumulate in or interact with anaerobic zones within tumors, as tumor microenvironments often become hypoxic (oxygen-deprived) as they grow.

For instance, understanding and targeting anaerobic microbial communities is crucial for processes like wastewater treatment or the breakdown of certain pollutants in oxygen-free sediments.
