Ammattijärjestö

Ammattijärjestö is the Finnish term for a trade union or professional association that represents workers in a specific trade or profession. These organizations are typically member-based and democratic, aiming to improve wages, working conditions, safety, and social protection for their members. They operate through collective bargaining, representation in disputes, and services such as legal assistance, training, and information on rights.

Core activities include negotiating collective agreements with employers or employers’ associations, arranging industrial peace agreements, and advocating for workers’ interests in public policy and regulation. They also provide career services, professional development, and guidance on workplace rights, aiming to support members throughout their careers.

Many ammattiliitot in Finland belong to one of the three national trade union confederations: SAK, STTK, and Akava. SAK covers a broad range of sectors and workers, STTK represents professionals and white-collar workers, and Akava includes graduates and researchers. Through these confederations, unions coordinate bargaining, member services, and social dialogue at the national level.

Membership is voluntary, and workers join the ammattiliitto that matches their profession. The Finnish labor market framework relies on these unions to represent workers in negotiations, contribute to social policy, and promote safe and fair workplaces. Democratic governance is exercised through member meetings and elected representatives.

Historically, Finnish unions emerged during the late 19th and early 20th centuries and expanded significantly in the mid-20th century as industrialization grew and the welfare state developed. Today, ammattiliitot remain central to Finnish collective bargaining and labour market cooperation.
