Altitudeaffect refers to the physiological and psychological changes experienced by individuals when exposed to elevated altitudes, typically above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level. These effects occur due to reduced atmospheric pressure, which lowers the partial pressure of oxygen in the air, leading to hypoxia—a condition where the body or a region of the body is deprived of adequate oxygen supply.

At moderate altitudes (up to 3,000 meters or 9,800 feet), symptoms may include mild shortness of breath, fatigue, headaches, and decreased cognitive performance. These are often collectively referred to as acute mountain sickness (AMS). More severe cases, such as high-altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) or high-altitude cerebral edema (HACE), can develop at higher elevations and pose serious health risks, including organ damage or even death if untreated.

Individuals vary in their susceptibility to altitudeaffect, influenced by factors like age, physical fitness, acclimatization rate, and genetic predisposition. Acclimatization is the body’s natural adaptation to high altitudes, involving increased production of red blood cells and enhanced oxygen extraction efficiency over time.
