Alaliitot

Alaliitot, or sub-associations, are semi-autonomous bodies within a larger umbrella organization such as a federation or union. They represent specific regions, sectors, or activities and carry out local work under the governance and policies of the parent organization.

Etymology: The term combines ala-, meaning under or subordinate, with liitto, meaning association or federation. The plural form is alaliitot.

Governance: Alaliitot typically have their own elected board and regular meetings, but their statutes and budget are approved by the parent organization. They implement national policies locally, coordinate member groups, and organize events within their scope.

Autonomy and duties: They are subordinate to the umbrella body; autonomy is bounded by the parent’s rules. They may handle local finances, codes of conduct, and internal affairs, while reporting to the parent and facing oversight or dissolution if obligations are not met.

Activities: Common examples include regional chapters within a sports or cultural federation, or sector-specific groups within professional associations. They may run local training, competitions, or advocacy aligned with national objectives.
