Ajoitushyökkäykset, commonly known as timing attacks, are a type of side-channel attack where an attacker exploits the time it takes for a cryptographic algorithm to execute. The core principle is that different inputs or operations can cause a cryptographic system to take slightly different amounts of time to process. By carefully measuring these execution times, an attacker can infer sensitive information, such as secret keys.

These attacks are non-intrusive as they do not require direct access to the internal state of the system. Instead, the attacker observes the system's behavior from the outside, typically by measuring the time elapsed between sending an input and receiving an output. For example, a timing attack might target a key comparison operation. If a system takes longer to process a mismatching key bit by bit, an attacker can deduce the correct key by observing how long each attempt takes.

The effectiveness of timing attacks depends on the precision of the time measurements and the variability in execution times introduced by the cryptographic implementation. Factors such as processor load, cache behavior, and network latency can complicate these attacks, but sophisticated techniques exist to mitigate these environmental noise factors.

Countermeasures against timing attacks often involve making cryptographic operations constant-time. This means that the execution time of an operation is independent of the secret data it processes. Techniques like blinding, where intermediate values are randomized, or ensuring all possible code paths take the same amount of time to execute are common strategies. Careful implementation practices and the use of secure libraries are crucial to prevent these vulnerabilities.
