Aitems is a term used to describe standardized digital records that represent items for AI-enabled processing in catalogs, marketplaces, and virtual environments. While not tied to a single formal standard, an Aitem is designed to be machine-actionable, interoperable, and extensible, enabling automated search, recommendation, pricing, and inventory tasks across platforms.

A typical Aitem includes an identifier, name, category or type, a set of attributes (as key-value pairs), provenance, media references, and contextual metadata such as tags or user ratings. Many implementations support versioning, multilingual labels, and governance data to track origin and updates. The data can be serialized in JSON-LD, RDF, or plain JSON to fit existing ecosystems.

Aitems are used across domains such as e-commerce, video games, digital asset libraries, and industrial asset management. They accommodate physical goods and virtual items, including configurable products, licenses, or components. The extensible attribute model allows domain-specific fields while maintaining a core for searchability and interoperability.

Interoperability is a central aim, with practitioners often mapping Aitems to established schemas such as schema.org Product or Dublin Core where appropriate. Governance considerations include data quality, provenance, privacy, and version control. Some communities promote lightweight core profiles to minimize fragmentation while allowing extensions.

Critics note potential fragmentation and the overhead of maintaining consistent metadata across systems. Proponents argue that Aitems can streamline automation, improve recommendations, and simplify data exchange in heterogeneous environments.
